2012 Late Havest Pinot Gris – Lovely texture and length with great fruit intensity

CREATING CLASSIC AUSTRALIAN WINES

I tasted 45 botrytis and late harvest wines last Friday and I think this would have gone done a treat. Fruit from Wrattonbully with 5% botrytis and a conservative 58g/l per litre of residual sugar, this treads the line between sweet and savoury well.

It smells a bit like bruised peach and pear skins, as if they’ve been lying in the orchard for a day or two and there’s a distinct savoury edge as well . The palate treads a delicate balance in ripe pear sweetness complemented by fresh apple acids, making for the perfect counterpoint. Lovely texture and length with great fruit intensity. I wish I had some chicken liver terrine to go with it.
