Terre à Terre Rouge 2014

A savoury, textured and elegant wine underpinned by pure cherry flavours. Beautiful now, though will benefit from careful cellaring.

FROM THE ART

Practising their craft with great skill and care, this group of talented winemakers are producing wines of exceptional quality, writes Toni Paterson.

To make great wine, a highly skilled person with an excellent palate must work tirelessly year-round. Quality grapes and a great season certainly make their job easier, as does a well-oiled winery. But ultimately, it is the winemaker who is responsible for a wine’s quality. One winemaker who makes truly unique and memorable wines is Xavier Bizot. Bizot and Lucy Croser are the husbandand- wife team behind Terre a Terre wines. Bizot’s wines are always captivating, but the 2014 Terre a Terre Rouge, $32, is stunning. It’s made from a non-traditional blend of cabernet franc, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon from Wrattonbully, South Australia. The shiraz and cabernet components were aged for 18 months in old barriques, however the cabernet franc portion went into a new 4000L foudre (French oak vat). The wine’s balance is impeccable and although reflective of its terroir, it has an alluring French sensibility.
