2023 Terre à Terre Crayères Vineyard Cabernet Shiraz
A slight change in blend this year: Cabernet Sauvignon at 65% and Shiraz at 35%. The close spaced Crayères Vineyard (1.5m by 1.5m) is grown on the 37 million year old Terra Rossa ridge in Wrattonbully. Maturation in French oak barrels (18% new) and old foudres for 14 months. Deep garnet to ruby colour. Potent and intense. Tobacco, cassis with licorice and meaty depth from the Shiraz, studded by peppercorns and clove. Violets and boysenberry off-set with leather, ginger spice, umami tinged sweetness of molasses and mushroom flesh with a hint of cedar. Structured, flowing and mid weight with the elegant touches from the cooler vintage. There’s spread of tight, drying and fine tannin that provides an underlay to the spiced, dark fruit. Just crying out for roast spring lamb to help cut through the young sweet protein, or hold off as a very slow mover in the cellar. Reviewed August 2025.
